    Bit to Do

A few weeks ago, I involved myself in my daughter's quest to take up running. We're both beginners, and neither of us had ever really run before. The last time I ran for any reason (other than chasing an escaped toddler or running away from a wasp) was in high school track. So I've never be wild about running. But it has grown on me, and I've found I can actually venture into training for a 5K without being devastated by the process.

Some of my newfound enjoyment of running may come from getting the right gear. My daughter and I have been using the C25K - 5K Trainer - Go from Couch Potato to Running a 5K free app. This app is an eight week program that basically alerts you when to walk and when to run. Each day preps you further and further to run three miles. If you stick to the program, by the end of the eight weeks you should be primed and ready for your first 5K, in our case the Parkland Splash 'n Dash on August 1.

The Splash 'n Dash at The Parklands of Floyds Fork is a 5K Walk/Run hosted by Kosair Children's Hospital. All registration money and other money raised by participants goes to support the work of the hospital. The run takes place Saturday, August 1 at 9 a.m. and will have lots of fun in store for the whole family.

According to their Facebook event page, "Runners and walkers can choose to splash their way through a 5k obstacle course or a kid-friendly 1k course filled with fun and refreshing ways to cool off in splash zones. After the race, enjoy family-friendly activities in the “Just for Kids” Zone, including water slides, water balloon toss, splash park, face painting and a water obstacle course."

Registration is $25 per person/family. Participants can raise funds and accumulate prizes based on the number of pledges received even before the event starts. Learn more and register here or by calling (502) 629-8060. The race is at Beckley Creek Park, 1310 S. Beckley Station Road, 40245
