After over thirty years Southern Culture on the Skids still isn’t on the skids.
They have been on the road and making albums for over three decades, and they show no signs of slowing down now. Forming in North Carolina in 1983, the band found its stride in the early to mid-90’s alternative rock scene and have continued to be a staple on the rock club and festival scene ever since. While the line-up has shifted some over the years, the core members Rick Miller, Dave Hartman, and Mary Huff have never wavered in the band’s mission to bring southern culture to the masses.
The band is known for their prolific live shows and support of bootleg trading among their passionate fan base. But their concerts aren’t mundane. They aren’t just putting on a show. A Southern Culture on the Skids show is a midnight Rocky Horror Picture show level event with fried chicken and banana pudding being thrown toward and from the crowd.
The band is fifteen albums deep into songs about dancing, sex, and (clearly) fried chicken, reflecting the southern roots from which the band was grown. Beyond their explosive live shows, their albums are critically acclaimed and speak sincerely to fans without the heavy handed nostalgia that the subject often brings up through art. Albums like “Dirt Track Date,” “Plastic Seat Sweat,” and “Mojo Box,” have kept the band on the scene, sounding as vigorous as ever. Songs like “8 Piece Box,” “Fried Chicken and Gasoline,” “White Trash,” “Swamp Fox,” and “69 El Camino” present the band as an edgy post-antebellum version of Bruce Springsteen.
Southern Culture on the Skids will be performing at Headliners, tonight May 8th at 9 PM. Tickets are still available for $15. Big Big will be opening the show.
