Show Up Hungry: A Review of North End Cafe

It was Friday night and my kids were going to Parents’ Night Out at school for THREE HOURS.  I had to find something to do, anything.  But the problem was that it is December and we’re all broke.  So I headed over to the Groupon website to see what was available.  There were so many awesome options I ended up writing this at the end of the night.  But first I settled on the North End Café.  There are two locations in Louisville, and the menu is full of amazing options.

I had been to the one on Frankfort once before for a baby shower over a year ago, but since then I’ve only driven by and reminded myself I wanted to go back.  I’m so glad I finally made it back.

The atmosphere is cozy and inviting and the bar is well-stocked.  The Groupon I purchased was for one Tapas-style appetizer, two entrees, and dessert.  We started off with a bowl of mussels in red wine tomato sauce with bacon, jalapenos, and basil.  They were cooked perfectly, and the jalapeno added just a hint of spice you don’t usually get with mussels in red wine tomato sauce.  When we were finished with the mussels we dipped our bread into the sauce, and when the bread ran out my husband started drinking the sauce with a spoon.  It was that good.

Next came our entrees.  I got the scallops and grits-four perfectly seared scallops nestled up next to cheese grits floating in a pool of tarragon beurre blanc.  Oh my.  This is the stuff dreams are made of.  My husband got the seafood pasta-he couldn’t not get more of those perfectly cooked mussels.  Ordinarily when we get that amount of food we have some leftover, but it was all so delicious that we cleaned our plates.

Finally for dessert we shared a flourless chocolate torte.  It was magnificent.  When we were finished with our meal we decided the North End Café would have to be on our short list of Louisville favorites.  I highly recommend trying this place out.  Just make sure you show up hungry.
