Wednesday night, Ear X-tacy Records is closing its doors—to open in a new location Friday morning. A look at the last day as the landmark store prepares for the next 15 years.

     01 Old description

    The current—for today—location at 1534 Bardstown Road.

    02 Sale

For the last week, Ear X-tacy has slashed prices in order to thin out inventory and continue to bring in customers.

    03 Racks

Many of the racks are empty, but the shop is still open until 6 p.m.

    04 Shoppers

Much of the store appears unchanged as people still browse the bins.

    05 Bins

Near the register, however, it's obvious that something's happening.

    06 Damaged

Not all will make the trip, however.

    07 Vinyl

Vinyl is—and will remain—a large draw for traditionalists and audiophiles.

    08 Bags

Although there is some evidence of packing up, the windows remain covered with stickers and promotional posters.

    09 Door

The shop has long faced Bardstown Road; not much will change in that regard come the weekend.

    10 Window of new place

No word on exactly when the old signs will appear, but this is the current exterior of the new location at 2226 Bardstown Road. The space is shared by a FedEx Kinko's and Tuesday Morning.

    11 Door of new place

The entrance will be not off the street, but through a vestibule leading to other businesses within the building. There is a full parking lot to the rear of the building.

    12 Work to be done

The 6,000-square-foot space will be open Friday at 10 a.m. The red floor reflects the color scheme from the previous location. "We'll be open," says owner John Timmons. "We may not be ready, but we'll be open."

    13 John T

Timmons is delighted with the new space, which is larger than he originally contracted for. He says that the first 100 shoppers on Friday morning will receive coupons good for $10 off their first purchase at the new Ear X-tacy.
