Love. Chivalry. Satire. Savage Rose Classical Theatre Company has it all and will present the classic Knight of the Burning Pestle beginning this Thursday.
Knight of the Burning Pestle will be performed on Dec. 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, and 11 at 7:30 p.m. each night. A matinee show will occur on Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. All performances will go on in the Mex Theater in the Kentucky Center for the Arts, located at 501 West Main Street in downtown Louisville.
Tickets are $10 for the industry night showing, which is Monday, Dec. 6, and are $15 for all other nights. Tickets for the two hour show can be purchased at the Kentucky Center box office, the Kentucky Center website, or by calling 502-584-7777. Knight of the Burning Pestle is a satire as well as a play-within-a-play. Jasper, the assistant to a merchant, is looking to elope with Luce to keep her from a marriage arranged for her.
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on point of view), there are numerous interruptions to this production, which includes a member of the audience getting his or her own story. In that story, a character must rescue patients held captive by a mischevious barber.
Francis Beaumont created Knight of the Burning Pestle, which saw its first performances in 1610 and its first printing in 1613. The show was performed Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lotel Theatre in 1953.
Before the show on Dec. 3, Dr. John Hunt, a University of Louisville professor, will present a lecture. The lecture is free with show admission.
Following Knight will the the William Shakespeare-created production of All's Well That Ends Well. The production will take place in March 2011. A play reading series, called Words, Words, Words, featuring readings of classic plays, will run in April 2011.
