With a little bit of game history and a whole lot of laughs, the women (and this time, one man) of Eve Theatre Company present their first foray into the world of musical theatre with Bingo! The Winning Musical.
The writing of Michael Heitzman and Ilene Reid is clever, and as those who have set foot in a real bingo hall will attest, wittily accurate. Vern, Honey and Patsy are caricatures of those who frequent the weekly games of many VFW and Knights of Columbus halls across America.
Vern with her gruff stubbornness, Honey with her less than genius intellect and Patsy, the superstitious queen of bingo charms are best friends who have been meeting for their weekly bingo game for years. When a newcomer appears on the scene and tries to engage them in conversation, the girls take a trip down memory lane and reflect on love, loss and the true meaning of friendship.
The songs in the show are upbeat and witty—with lyrics actually worth listening to. And while singing isn’t a strength of the ensemble as a whole, heart is. This cast is a pleasure to watch, simply because they are onstage having fun with the script and with each other. Hannah Clore (Alison) has a lovely voice, and her duet “B4,” with Diane Stretz-Thurmond (Bernice) is poignant and strong.
During the production, audience members are invited to partake in three real games of bingo, prizes included.
Whether you’re an old pro of the game from excursions with Grandma or haven’t covered a free space since your Halloween parties in grade school, this show will be the most fun you’ve ever had at bingo.
Bingo! The Winning Musical is directed by Nancy Hoover and continues through November 10. All performances will be held at the Henry Clay Theatre, 604 South Third Street, in Louisville. Tickets are $22/$19 students and seniors, and may be reserved by calling 502-759-1912, or purchased online.
