Paul Thorn Band is in town this evening, live and on-stage at Headliners. The band will be opening the show with an acoustic set, following it up with a full on rock n’ roll show. Thorn has been on the scene since his 1997 debut, and has been on the forefront of the Americana music trend and independent Artist bandwagon from the beginning.
Hailing from Tupelo, Mississippi (yes, the very same Tupelo that produced Elvis), Thorn was raised a preacher’s kid, whose father presided over two local churches – one was white, and the other was black. From this diverse upbringing Thorn developed his definitive sound that blends country, blues, and gospel – all into one chilled out fusion of American roots music.
Thorn, professional boxer, burst onto the scene in 1997 with his debut album Hammer and Nail, and since has released six more albums all without the help of a major record company. He owns all of the albums, all of his own publishing, and pays for all of the expenses that exist therein. This has made him a pioneer of the independent music craze for which Macklemore was so broadly lauded. Thorn has been practicing the practice since day one.
This tour the band is promoting the release of their latest album, Too Blessed to Be Stressed, an album that departs from Thorn’s usually bleak songs filled with dark characters that capture the essence of the rural south. This time he decided to write an album filled with happy, sing-a-long hooks that will brighten the listener’s day. It is a truly infectious listen that bounces around in your head for days.
Paul Thorn Band will be performing two sets (one acoustic and one electric) tonight at Headliners Music Hall, Doors @ 7:00 PM, show at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $23.
