Who doesn’t need a ukulele and drum loops?  I know I woke up most nights in a cold sweat jonesing for such sweet sounds…and then I found The Tune-yards.

Hailing from New England, Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner have been playing with juxtaposition since the band’s 2009 inception – mixing whimsical lyrics with dark treacherous ones, and earthy natural arrangements over synthetic electronic rhythms.  The songs are catchy, generally high energy, and carry an almost chant-like quality, at times.  Over the course of three albums:  Bird-Brains, Whokill, and Nikki Nack – the band has refined a specific sound, and built a superb live show on the road.

They did a well-received set at this year’s Forecastle, returning to town tonight at Headliners in support of their latest album, this year’s Nikki Nack.  James Tillman will be opening the show for them.  The show begins at 9 PM and tickets are $20.

    About Brent Owen

Born and raised in Louisville, I have lived here most of my life (except during a short furlough, when I, lovelorn and naive, followed a girl to Baton Rouge). My roots are here, my family, my friends, and my life are all here. I work primarily as a free-lance writer for a few local and regional publications. I have also written two books (one a memoir, the other a novel) that barring some divine intervention, will probably never see the light of day. I find myself deeply ingrained in the local bar scene, or perhaps better said, I often indulge in the local drinking culture. I love music, movies, comedy, and really just about any other live performance art.
