    Bit to Do

Paperback Pup: Author Rebecca Heishman shares the story of rescue-dog Millie at

Human beings are curious creatures.  We stride the planet on two legs; we have thumbs; we wear pants.  We defy nature with displays of ever-increasing  stupidity developed by the same big brains that discovered fire, wrote Ulysses and navigated the moon.  We are an unusual quirk of evolution, something perhaps even more evident in our strange customs than in our upright posture.  The human has a great propensity for creating not only absurdly-complicated relationships with our fellows, but with our animal cousins as well – evidenced by inventions ranging from fluffy pet sweaters to choker chains.  And no bond between man and beast runs deeper in its complexity than that of Man’s Best Friend – also known as Canis lupus familiaris, or “domestic dog”.  At our sides from cave paintings to Keeping Up with the Kardashians, our four-legged friends have weathered all types of storms, experiencing both great love and sorrow.  Hear one such story this upcoming Monday, May 21st as author Rebecca Heishman shares the story of rescue dog Millie at Carmichael’s Bookstore.

Heishman’s new book, The Misadventures of Millie, recounts the ordeal of tough pup Millie following her release from a puppy mill.  A former breeder dog suddenly given a new lease on life, Millie is adopted by Becky and William and given her first tastes of freedom.  Explaining candidly both the humor and heartache associated with rescued pets, Misadventures details Millie’s new found joy at home and relays the messages of perseverance in the face of trial and a sense of carpe diem  – trans-species life lessons.

Join Heishman at the Carmichael’s Bookstore Frankfort Avenue location as she reads selections from Misadventures, pens signatures and discusses the special companionship to be found in the furry faces of rescue animals.  This free event starts at 7pm, and copies of Heishman’s The Misadventures of Millie can be purchased at the Frankfort Avenue store in paperback for $9.99.  Take your best buddy for a walk and release your inner dog-lover at Carmichael’s.

Carmichael’s Bookstore has two area locations: 1295 Bardstown Road and 2720 Frankfort Avenue.  For more information, visit the event page or call the Frankfort Avenue store at (502) 896-6950.
