My Morning Jacket will be back soon with a lot new music. Louisville’s biggest band told Rolling Stone in its new issue (now on newsstands) that they are currently working on not one, but two studio albums. The first will be released in April and the other in 2016. That’s two albums in two years!
Jim James, frontman for MMJ, told the magazine that ended up with 24 songs are now splitting them into the two records.
James said, “I love making each record sound different. I love the thrill of putting on a record and feeling like you got the wrong one from the factory.”
There’s even more music in store from James who plans to release his second solo disc by 2016. James tells Rolling Stone, “The Jacket is about creating a circle of power. The solo record is more of a patchwork.”
Since MMJ’s last album (2011’s Circuital), its members have been keeping busy. Most recently, James has been working on The New Basement Tapes, a collaboration with Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford, and others to put some unpublished Bob Dylan lyrics to music. MMJ drummer Patrick Hallahan released a record with his project Spanish Gold.
Guitarist Carl Broemel and bassist Tom Blakenship worked on former MMJ member Johnny Quaid’s album for his band The Ravenna Colt. Look for that album to drop on Feb 10. Keyboardist Bo Koster played piano on Los Angeles country singer Sam Outlaw’s new record.
