My favorite Christmas candy is the mighty, magnificent, mouthwatering Modjeska. Preferably those made by Muth's Candy at 630 East Market St. The Modjeska is a simple candy: a fluffy marshmallow wrapped in tender buttery caramel and folded up into wax paper. It doesn't sound like much; but you can keep your sugared pecan divinity, your toffee-crunch popcorn peanut brittle, and your praline bacon truffles (actually, send all those to me!) but I promise this little bite of soft candy is the best you'll have this Christmas season.
The Modjeska is named after Helena Modjeska, a Polish actress who so impressed Anton Busath (a French candymaker who immigrated to Louisville) that he named the confection in her honor. After Busath's store was destroyed by a fire in 1947, his son gave the recipe for the candy to Muth's. Muth's has been in operation in Louisville since 1921.
If you're too busy to get to Muth's before Christmas you can always get your Modjeska fix at their website.
