My conservative parents realized early in my childhood that they couldn’t completely keep me from the influence of TV and radio, so their clever defense was to allow me TV consumption of the most tame and harmless programs they could find that I might still be convinced were cool.
This meant re-runs of The Brady Bunch and Little House on the Prarie and childhood crushes on Maureen McCormick (That season of Celebrity Fit Club she was on a few years ago was an emotional rough patch for me…) and the actress who played Laura Ingalls older sister, Mary - Melissa Sue Anderson.
I make this weird personal confession only as a way to explain why I instantly know the importance of what The Museum of the American Printing House for the Blind is celebrating this weekend.
Saturday marks Mary Ingalls birthday (the real one – not sweet Melissa), and given Mary Ingalls position as a pioneer (no pun intended) of succeeding despite blindness (She lost her eyesight at age 14), the museum has quite a party planned. Festivities run from 10am-12pm and include costumes, a family look-alike contest,various exhibits and interactive displays and more.
The event is free, but space is limited so registration is required. Call 899-2213.
