Five years ago, fans of classic drive-in cult films were treated to something wonderful: a special project by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez called “Grindhouse,” which, as everyone remembers, was a double feature of classic-style violent exploitation films. Tarantino produced “Death Proof,” about a psychotic stuntman with a very special car, and Rodriguez came out with the bizarre zombie film “Planet Terror.” In true Grindhouse style, trailers for other violent features were presented between the films. These trailers were, of course, fake – part of the show. However, audiences liked them so much that they began to be made into actual films. The first of these was “Machete,” featuring the badass Danny Trejo as a machete-wielding vigilante out to take down a corrupt politician with anti-immigration policies.
It is the second film with which we are concerned: the extremely unsettling and ultra-violent “Hobo With a Shotgun.” Guess what it's about?
Rutger Hauer stars as the titular hobo who returns to his hometown to find it completely overrun by crime and perversion. As if the crooked cops and pedophiliac Santa Claus aren't enough, the town is completely in the grip of a man called The Drake and his two sons – whose favorite pastime is murder in the most torturous ways imaginable. The hobo is outraged, and so he obtains a shotgun and with the help of a prostitute he befriends, proceeds to clean the streets as best he can.
Baxter Avenue Theater presents “Hobo With a Shotgun” tomorrow, Saturday, at midnight. But beware: this film is not for the faint of heart. The violence portrayed is sadistic in a way that “A Clockwork Orange” only dreams of being. This is sure to be truly shocking on the big screen. Fans of Troma films should take note: imagine Lloyd Kaufman was given an actual budget to work with; something like this would be the result.
