I am not by any means a science-fiction nerd, but there are certain genre tropes I find myself putting a lot of thought into. For a while, for instance, I was obsessed with convincing all my friends of how, were it possible, they should not
, under any circumstances, allow themselves to be teleported; the reasoning is a little complex, but the conversation often somehow leads to a philosophical discussion about the “I,” the very essence of a human, and what makes a person a person.
Time travel – that's a big one, too. The future cannot be changed due to an idea called the Grandfather Paradox, but this is often ignored even though it's basic pseudoscience. (I love the
Terminator
series, but it's amazing how absurd it is.) But then you can get into the idea of parallel universes and the concept of entropy and how that might affect something on a loop (see: the excellent micro-budget indie film
).
I could go on and on here, but I'll get to the point: Baxter Avenue Theater presents a midnight screening of
tomorrow (Saturday). It is the glorious 1980s and Doc Brown has invented a time -traveling car, the Delorean. After a snafu with some terrorists, his friend, high-school student Marty McFly, finds himself transported back to 1955 – where he inadvertently alters the course of history, putting his very existence in danger.
Here I could explain why this doesn't logically work, but I'll just once again give a link to an article about the Grandfather Paradox.
It's still a great movie, though.
