As October marches on, we inch ever closer to the Main Event, the night of ghosts and ghouls, monsters and the macabre: All Hallow's Eve. It is tradition in this greatest of months to spend the cool evenings cuddled up on the couch – or in the theater – with a scary movie. I, in fact, have plans to do just such a thing tonight. And tomorrow (Saturday): Baxter Avenue Theater has us covered.
Midnights at the Baxter presents a Frankenstein
double feature, which begins promptly at 10:00 (so not quite midnight) with the 1931 classic. Colin Clive stars as Henry Frankenstein, a doctor obsessed with life and death. After exhuming body parts from graves, he constructs a person and reanimates his creation, resulting in the Monster! Boris Karloff's monster has since become the standard depiction, with the trademark bolts on the side of the neck and weird haircut. It all started here.
Frankenstein
is followed by its 1935 sequel,
. Colin Clive returns as Dr. Frankenstein, who has vowed to stop playing God after the disastrous results of his first attempt. However, his monster is lonely and wants him to construct a mate – a female monster for him to love. Frankenstein is hesitant, but finally agrees with the urging of his mentor, Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger).
