Do we have any Stephen King fans in the house? Of course we do. He was one of my favorite authors when I was in high school. I grew up in a very religious household, however, so I always felt the need to hide these reading activities. I devoured the “Dark Tower” series. It fascinated me – how pretty much everything he wrote tied in to the series in one way or another. It was also, to my memory, my first foray into metafiction (in the later books of the series).
George Romero fans? Of course – this is a film column. So: there's a treat in store for those of you who fit into both categories: a midnight screening of Creepshow at Baxter Avenue Theaters tomorrow, Saturday. Based on stories by King, who also provided the screenplay, and directed by Romero, Creepshow features five chilling tales of terror! including a family gathering on a gruesome Father's Day, a meteorite packaging a devious vegetative organism (which segment stars Stephen King himself), the wrath of a cuckolded husband (starring Leslie Nielson), a mysterious crate containing a mysterious and murderous something, and cockroaches, cockroaches everywhere (but not a drop to drink). (Side note: see the X-Files episode “The War of the Coprophages,” which contains perhaps Scully's best line in the entire series.)
