Kentucky Center presents An Acoustic Evening with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt on Sunday, March 11 at the Brown Theatre. Always a popular draw in Louisville, these two well-known singer-songwriters bring their songs and stories to town for an intimate show (no Large Band accompanies Lovett this time).
Lovett has a brand new studio album out called Release Me, and it marks the end of Lovett's long relationship with Curb Records. Like many artists, Lovett will go the indie route, though according to an interview with Gary Graff at Billboard magazine, what that will look like is still in the planning stages: "I haven't worked out any new business relationships. What I'd really like to do is be able to make my own records, then probably affiliate with someone for distribution." The songs on Release Me are largely covers with only a couple of original songs. Lovett's last record for Curb is a tribute of sorts to some of the artists that have influenced him over the years, such as Chuck Berry, Townes Van Zandt, and Jesse Winchester. Guests on the album include Sara and Sean Watkins from Nickel Creek, k.d. lang, and Kat Edmonson.
John Hiatt also has a recent release, Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns, but both artists have such a rich catalog of songs under their belts, any concert is sure to draw broadly from their collective output -- not just the newest.
