It’s good to be raising a family in Louisville this week. Not only will we almost reach 60 degrees by mid-week, but there are some unique, cheap, family-friendly opportunities to experience some great art in the city. Valentine’s Day is on Monday, and this week, Louisville just might be for lovers of art (even lovers with kids).

This Tuesday, February 15th, the Main Library will feature a family story time in conjunction with the Louisville Ballet. According to the library’s press release, “Children of all ages and their families are invited to a special Louisville Ballet Family Storytime featuring Coppelia. This comic tale, based on two stories by E.T.A. Hoffman, involves a life-sized doll, an eccentric toy maker, and a couple on the verge of love.” Louisville Ballet dancer, Emily Reinking O’Dell, will read the classic tale at 6:30 p.m., meet and greet families, and help children make a Valentine’s Day craft to take home. One lucky family will walk away with 4 tickets to see the ballet on stage!

The Speed Art Museum is also featuring “The Spirit of Impressionism Family Lab now through May 24th from 10:30-5 p.m. Families can explore their imaginations while creating art inspired by the impressionists in the Art Sparks hands-on workshop. The lab is open during regular museum hours. If “modern” is your bag, the exhibit “Modern in the Making: Design 1900-2000 features 20th-century design: furniture, ceramics, silver, and other materials for audiences 5 and up. The exhibit is free with museum admittance.

If you’ve finished your hokey class Valentine’s, take the kiddos out for some authentic education in art this week.
