    Bit to Do

Louisville to get less weird when the Highlands Tap Room closes

For 11 years if you wanted to wet your whistle while staying true to the local mantra of keeping things unique to the Ville, you could always visit Louisville’s most bohemian neighborhood and get an adult beverage at the Highlands Tap Room. That will change by the end of 2013 when their doors close for the final time.

According to the owners of the Tap Room, the problem stemmed from failed negotiations with its current landlord Kashmira Singh. Singh has owned the property for the last seven years and also owns the adjacent Indian restaurant Kashmir. The owners say they’ve been trying for years to renew their lease but Singh opted not to do so. Therefore the location at 1279 Bardstown Road will close at the end of 2013.

The response on the Highlands Tap Room Facebook page has been one of support and shared good memories. Overwhelmingly, though, fans will miss their favorite soon-to-be former meeting place.

Not an organization that wants to go out quietly, though, HTR says they will “rock out til the very end.” That’s a signal that everything that you’ve come to expect from the establishment will continue. That’s good news for patrons that enjoy their craft brews and their stubborn insistence on having bands that play original music rather than cover outfits.

Even with that said, all is not lost for fans of the Highlands Tap Room. A second location still operates and will continue. This one was built when it became obvious that it would be problematic for them to remain at the old location. Just head down the street to the Highlands Tap Room Grill at 1058 Bardstown Road to get your libations and food. A menu is something not offered at the original Tap Room.

Fans of the original HTR said they hope the vibe is similar at the Grill. Come 2014, they’ll find out.
