In the past, Louisville has been focused on Card Nation basketball and football, but how about a new kind of football? Starting April of 2015, Slugger Field will be home to the Louisville City Football Club.

On Wednesday, Mayor Fischer, Philip Rawlins, founder and president of theOrlando City Soccer Club, and Wayne Estopinal, a minor owner of the Orlando City Soccer Club, held a press conference at Slugger Field.

They announced the beginning of a minor league soccer club in our city next spring with head coach James O’Connor. O’Connor has the familiarity to lead this team to success. He was a player-assistant coach from Orlando City and gained experience as a midfielder for Stoke City.

While the press conference was at Slugger Field, it was only fitting to announce that the Louisville City FC will be working with the Louisville Bats and will be playing at Slugger Field. Season tickets will range from $240 to $420 for 15 games. Individual tickets are said to range from $10 to $25.

Creating a new team in a big city requires a lot of support. The Louisville City Football Club has received this support from all over, but more specifically from The Coopers, a Louisville pro soccer support group. A cooper is a barrel-maker, which is only fitting when you see the crest of the team. The background of the crest is a barrel in the color purple, which is the team color. In the center of the crest is a fleur de lis, the iconic symbol of our city.

With the world cup right around the corner, soccer is now on the brain to many sports enthusiasts around the world, but will it be for the city of Louisville? So far, I’d say so! Since Wednesday, the Louisville City FC has over 2,000 followers on twitter and is a trending hashtag around here, which is amazing in a short two days! Social medias are blowing up with this news and we cannot wait to see what this team has in store for us next spring.
