Both University of Louisville and University of Kentucky women’s basketball is in the midst of their first major homecomings. For Kentucky, they continue their homecoming tomorrow taking on Southern Miss. Louisville will open their homecoming series Sunday at two against Xavier.

In honor of this and because I established an all-cards and all-cats team for men’s basketball, I thought it would only make sense to combine the stars of UofL and UK women’s basketball and create An All Cards-Cats Team.

At Point Guard from Louisville, Shoni Schimmel, a current guard Schimmel as one countless awards and has been consistently ranked among the best in the country. Her ability to lead has been demonstrated in high school where she was a stand out as well as with the Cards. It’s this leadership that makes her an asset to this team.

At shooting guard, Kentucky’s Valerie Still, currently with the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, Still holds the record at Kentucky for most points guard in men’s or women’s basketball. I think it’s pretty safe to say putting her at shooting guard only makes sense.

At power forward Still’s current and former teammate, Victoria Dunlap. A former Cat and current Mystic like Still, Dunlap’s tenacity makes her an obvious choice for the team.

At small forward, Angel McCoughtry this former Card and current WNBA all-star with the Atlanta Dream has her jersey retired at Louisville. But more than that, was a first overall pick in the WNBA and led the American team to the Gold in 2007’s Pan American Games.

At Center Louisville native Monique Reid, another current Card Reid’s positive attitude makes her a positive addition to the squad. A strong all-around athlete Reid possesses a unique strength to the position.

This year though, both teams appear to be strong competitors in their respective conferences and it would appear that both will have post season births.

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
