According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s website, Labor Day was first observed on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. Labor Day is a national holiday that occurs annually on the first Monday of September. It was designed to reward American workers for their contribution to the well-being of our nation. We all love and deserve a three day weekend, and Labor Day weekend has become a mini late summer getaway for many families across the nation.
We take our last summer trip to the lake. We have our last cookout of the season and eat the last of the 7 billion or so hotdogs that Americans consume throughout the summer season (between Memorial Day and Labor Day). We hit the shopping centers and take advantage of those great Labor Day mega sales. We get outside and work in our gardens or our yards and prepare for the fall season that is approaching. We try to relax and enjoy this much needed day off and spend it with family and friends.
Around Louisville and Kentuckiana, there are many opportunities to enjoy some festivities throughout the entire weekend. From these events to planning a weekend getaway to making one last splash at the spraygrounds, you and your family have plenty of options to get out around the city this weekend and fully enjoy the long weekend. You may be spending your last few days at your local pool or planning a picnic at one of our great Metro Parks. Or you might be like my family and welcoming family to your home for the weekend and celebrating the return of college football that will be plentiful this weekend. Whether you are watching the UK match-up with Western or cheering on the Sugar Bowl Champions at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium this Sunday, enjoy yourselves and have fun!
On Monday evening, put the flip flops away, clean out your firepit, and stop wearing white, right?
