“It’s probably not something most people see when they go to work,” said Sarah McCullum about members of the Nerveless Nocks All-American Stunt and Thrill Show, who have been practicing outside her window during her internship at Kentucky State Fair Board Media/Public Relations.
Sarah and Paige Breedlove were hired by the KSF Board for a summer-long internship leading up to the fair. Paige, a senior at Western Kentucky University, and Sarah, a recent graduate of WKU began their stint in May, focusing on several promotional projects. They were responsible for the Guide to Fun, a preview of fair activities published in the Courier-Journal, as well as press releases and ad copy for various events. Beyond print material, the girls also update the KSF Facebook, Twitter, and (new this year) Pinterest accounts, not to mention the Kentucky State Fair blog, “The Shake Up.” This week, the girls have been keeping these social networks fresh.
“Be it weather updates, traffic information, ways to save, or particular awards given out throughout the day, we want fairgoers to know what is happening around the fair,” said Sarah. “We try to communicate these happenings in a quick, efficient, and entertaining way.”
While learning marketing tactics, developing writing skills, and juggling multiple social media outlets, the internship has also allowed them to enjoy many aspects of the fair.
“One of my favorite parts has been giving away concert tickets through social media,” said Paige, a music fan who has been looking forward to hearing a few of the headliners.
And let’s not forget the food.
“My heart might hate me, but I have to at least try these foods,” said Sarah, who mentioned the donut burgers and fried Kool-Aid among this year’s featured items. “I’m treating myself once a day to some fair food… When else am I going to get the chance to be at a state fair for 11 days straight?”
Paige and Sarah, natives of Sellersburg and Memphis respectively, admit their internship has increased their love of the south, Kentucky, and Louisville.
“Louisville is a great place to work, and a great place to play,” said Paige.
