If a tree falls in the middle of the forest, Heike Endemann makes a sculpture of it. Heike is a wood sculptress from Germany and is one of the 2011 Artists in Residence at Bernheim National Forest. Heike works with wood from fallen trees from the forest and transforms them to shapes that will leave you thinking, “how’d she do that?”
Heike says, "For my sculptures, I mainly use wood. Various kinds of trees present material with the most different colors, structures, surfaces, and smells. This is important because first contact with the wood decides the relationship that I build with an evolving piece of art." The sculptures she has created are on display in Bernheim's Education Center.
An artist reception for Heike is planned for Wednesday, Oct. 26th from 4 – 7 p.m. in the Education Center Gallery.
Applications for the 2012 Artist in Residence program will be accepted November 1, 2011 through January 31, 2012. All applicants will receive notification by email in late March.
