Assumption High School's Rose Theatre Company will present the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I beginning tomorrow night.
Performances of The King and I are scheduled Nov. 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, and 10 at 7 p.m. each night. A matinee will occur on Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. All performances are to go on at Assumption High School, located at 2170 Tyler Lane in the Highlands area of Louisville. Tickets for each show are $14 for adults, $9 for students, and $9 for seniors 60 and over. All tickets can be purchased at the door or the Assumption High School website.
The King and I is the story of an English widow named Anna Leonowens, who is brought to Bangkok by the King of Siam (now Thailand) to teach his many children from many wives. During the course of the musical, the focus shifts to the King of Siam's struggle to implement Western ideals in a court still riddled with ancient customs. Rogers and Hammerstein's musical was developed into a film in 1956, which won 5 academy awards, including Best Actor for Yul Brynner. The musical includes several positively iconic songs: "I Whistle a Happy Tune", "Getting to Know You", "Hello Young Lovers", and "Shall We Dance".
