Across America, nature lovers, hikers and trail bikers will be taking to their local trails, and national parks to celebrate National Trails Day, this Saturday, June 5. Metro Louisville is celebrating National Trails Day at three local Parks, and we're all invited to tie on our hiking shoes and hit the trails.

Hiking the new 3-mile trail will follow with interpretive stations along the route. Children will love the activities and coloring contest. And, refreshments will be provided at the Welcome Center. Also at 9 a.m., begin a 3-mile walk/hike at Iroquois Park. A picnic follows at 11:30 a.m. Then, head over to Cherokee Park to volunteer for a trail maintenance event hosted by Olmsted Parks Conservancy at 1 p.m. Registration is required for this event. EP "Tom" Sawyer State Park will host a 1 to 1.5-mile hike focusing on the importance of the outdoors for physical and emotional health. Along the trail, hikers will identify plants, birds, and animals found along the way. Maintenance for the high-traffic trail will also be discussed.
To find a National Trails Day event elsewhere in Kentucky, or anywhere in the United States, visit the American Hiking Society. And, be sure to check out AHS's hiking resources page for information on hiking safety, proper gear, outdoor skills, and hiking with the whole family.
Weather permitting, Saturday is the perfect opportunity to discover something new, and support our City of Parks.
