Despite the endless miles of church-dotted landscape outside the metropolitan area, there is plenty of spirit to go around even in the city. In fact, Bellarmine University patron Thomas Merton famously experienced a kind of religious epiphany at the corner of Fourth and Walnut (now) Muhammad Ali in the late ‘50s.
It’s been more than 60 years since Merton’s realization, but this coming Sunday, January 15, Prof. Philip Sheldrake will present “Spirituality and the City” at Hilary’s, inside Bellarmine’s Horrigan Hall (behind Einstein Bros. Bagels) at 3:00 p.m.
A tenured veteran of several religious departments including those at the Cambridge Theological Federation and the University of Wales, Sheldrake has been closely involved in the development of Christian spirituality as an academic field, as well as a student of Indian religions in India. He has written or edited 11 books, predominantly on the interface of spirituality, theology, and religious history.
