The buses are making their practice runs, the big box stores have been selling backpacks, notebooks and pencils since late July, and a sense of excitement and/or dread is entering the hearts and minds of many a teenager. This can only mean one thing: School is starting next week in Louisville; time to dress the part.

This guide is aimed mainly at those whose children attend JCPS schools that don’t mandate uniforms, an experience foreign to yours truly the entire time I was in elementary and secondary school back in Augusta, Kansas; this also means I can’t answer that silly question about where I went to [high] school, alas. While I don’t expect the hallways of these schools to resemble Lincoln Center in early September, I would hope these ideas will inspire enough students to dress their best; leave the pajamas for spirit week.

One trend both young men and women can definitely give a go is the militaristic look. A long-runner that’s been with us since the start of this decade, the trend continues to be strong this fall; think khaki green and utilitarian (where else are they going to put their smartphones?).

Another idea that’s universal, given the cool summer and the cooler temps inside the buses, is double denim. The easiest way to style this is to have two different washes paired together, such as a darker jean jacket over a lighter pair of high-waisted jean.

Tired of patterned prints that come straight out of a digitized soul? So were the designers, opting to the bring back the classics this season. Leopard, plaid, pinstripes, houndstooth, gingham, your teen can’t go wrong no matter what pieces you choose so long as the rest of the outfit is kept simple and clean.

This new school year is the best time to start anew, with these and other trends for fall just waiting to be tried. And as always, your teen must dress for their body first.

In the meantime, all of you (the parents and the children) can give these ideas the onceover at local stores and boutiques such as the newly opened Gordmans across the river in Clarksville, the soon-to-be-opened Monkee’s on Brownsboro Road, Ross on Outer Loop, and Urban Outfitters on Bardstown Road.
