    “It’s a growing issue—people wanting to eat well, while still staying on a budget,” Markeeta Burgin, a representative of Lucky’s Market, said while sidestepping a woman who was wheeling her toddler in a BOB running stroller toward the colorful mounds of non-GMO candy. “But at Lucky’s we want to make sure that you can get the quality food you want without spending your entire paycheck.”

    Louisville’s newest grocery store had their grand opening this Wednesday, and the aisles were bustling with people buying up cart-fulls of Lucky’s extensive organic, specialty, and gluten free selections, as well as quality, fresh produce from a wide range of local farms—all while listening to the acoustic stylings of musical duo Kimmet & Doug, who were perched, guitars in hand, behind the check-out.

    While the aesthetic was decidedly suburban— with whitewashed walls and faux distressed-wood signage—the variety was impressive. With a bakery, deli, juice bar, natural living section, and a beer-station complete with growlers, affectionately called “lucky jugs,” Lucky’s is the perfect love-child of Piggly Wiggly and Rainbow Foods, convenient for East End customers just off of North Hurstbourne.

    But Lucky’s has a twist that differentiates it from other chain health-food stores. Lucky’s Market’s  Giving Program is dedicated to improving the quality of life where employees live and work by supporting vendors and their communities and local organizations that address vital local needs through volunteering, donations, and their own foundation.

    Now, that’s a contribution to the Louisville community to which I will raise my Lucky’s $2 citrus kombucha.
