Generation iSpeak is a non-profit organization that develops leaders, thinkers, speakers, and creators. Free self-expression is taught through poetry, learning of basic literacy skills, enhancement of critical and analytical abilities, exercising creativity, imagination, and originality. These elements are all expressed through the organization. GIS is a program that stands by it's foundation of freedom, a safe place, powerful, and transforming for the youth of Metro Louisville.
They host “word”shops regularly, inspiring the youth to tell their stories and develop their veritable voices through writing. Each workshop is open to all 13-19 year olds, as they are encouraged to explore the different aspects of writing, artistic and critical growth, and explore their gifts and wounds. These workshops are free, but require registration.
Each “word”shop is taught by leading poets, writers, spoken word artists, and cultural activists and are conducted throughout the Metro Louisville area. These are local mentors, teachers, and executive directors in the community.
Other programs available are “iSpeak”, a monthly community open-mic night for the artists, staff, volunteers and friends. This poetry event is held every 1st Friday at Day’s Espresso on Bardstown Road. “I Still Speak” is a program for hearing students to gain access into the world of the deaf community. The opportunity to learn ASL is offered and a hearing instructor is brought in twice a month. Their last program, “LOvE mE qUeEr” is a spoken word and performing arts showcase that highlights the voices of a diverse Louisville.
Encourage your friends, children, or anyone you know that is struggling with issues and are interested in enhancing learning in the areas of literacy, arts, and education to attend Generation iSpeak. Their next “word”shop is this Sunday, February 2nd, at Bon Air Library at 3:00 P.M. They will also hold a “word”shop at Newburg Library on February 2nd at 4:30 P.M.
