It’s July. The novelty of summer vacation has started to wear off, and the familiar refrain of “I’m bored…” is beginning to echo through the house with ever-increasing frequency.
Now is the time for action. With scorching temperatures outside, it’s inadvisable to banish the kids from the house with retorts of “find something to do and don’t come back ‘til it’s dark.”
Yes, that’s what you had to do.
No, it’s not like that anymore.
Don’t give up hope yet. Louisville businesses are aware of your summer struggle, and they’re here to help you out.
The Louisville Free Public Library is offering a free summer reading program, where kids from birth through 5th grade can read books and earn rewards. The All Star Reader program runs through August 11th. Kids can read to earn prizes such as ball caps and passes to the Louisville Slugger Museum, the Science Center, Squire Boone Caverns and the planetarium. They may also enter to win one of several grand prizes. Kids can pick up a scorecard for the program at any Louisville branch.
Cinemark Theater at Tinseltown offers the Summer Movie Clubhouse. Kid-friendly movies are shown on Saturdays and Sundays at 10am. Tickets are $1.
Rave’s Stonybrook and Preston Crossings theaters sponsor the Free Family Film Festival, Monday and Thursday mornings at 10 am. Doors open at 9:30, and admission is free.
Movies for all theaters are rated G or PG.
Lowe’s hosts free Build and Grow Clinics, which are held two weekends per month. The next clinics are July 14 and 15, and have a Kung Fu Panda theme. Participants will build a wooden project, and can register online.
Home Depot hosts free Kids Workshops on the first Saturday of every month (the next one is this Saturday, July 7th) from 9-12. In the July workshop, kids can build a moving truck. Participants also receive a kids workshop apron, commemorative pin, and a certificate.
