Forecastle Festival's Sunday night headliner, The Flaming Lips, will perform on the West Stage, scheduled for a 10:30 p.m. start. Q magazine included this legendary psychedelic rock band on its list of 50 Bands to See Before You Die, so now may be your opportunity to cross one off your list.

Formed in 1983 in Norman, Oklahoma, The Flaming Lips are helmed by guitarist, singer, showman, and writer of whimsically strange songs, Wayne Coyne, who is known for patrolling the crowd during shows in a man-sized bubble, which may just be an idea before its time. Coyne is joined by long-time bass player Michael Ivins (the only other original member), guitarist Steven Drozd, and drummer Kliph Scurlock.

The Flaming Lips have amassed a loyal following, won Grammys, been the subject of a documentary film, and become a truly iconic American rock band. Their song, “Do You Realize?” was voted in as the official rock song of their home state of Oklahoma in 2009. Too bad it couldn't have sported one of Coyne's singular titles such as “Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon ( Utopia Planitia),” “A Train Runs Over The Camel But Is Derailed By The Gnat,” or “Placebo Headwound.”

Of their 13 studio albums, two of the most critically praised were The Soft Bulletin in 1999 and 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, which was certified Gold by the RIAA. More recently, The Flaming Lips released a track-for-track remake of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in 2009, which they have performed in its entirety on a couple of occasions, including at Bonnaroo 2010. Tripping lightly off the tongue, the remake is called The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches Doing The Dark Side of the Moon.

The video below from this year's Bonnaroo Festival showcases the theatrics one can expect from a Flaming Lips show:
