The Floyd Theater presents the annual Oscar Watch Party
    Print this page

This is one of my favorite times of year. Forget Christmas, forget Halloween – I wait every year for Oscars season. It's silly, I know. The awards are meaningless, the wrong films always win, the decisions often seem to be based on politics rather than merit, the writing for the ceremony is atrocious (which is weird, right? considering Hollywood has some fantastic writers working for them...), and it is all just a big show for ratings. But! It is a hell of a lot of fun, especially with a group of friends, double-especially when participating in my patented drinking game (it's not patented, but it is my invention). I always watch as many of the nominees as I can in an attempt to most accurately predict the winners. I generally don't do very well regardless, but I enjoy watching all these movies and then complaining about undeserving winners on Facebook, because this is 2013 and that's what Facebook is for.

You can sit at home and watch the magic unfold alone, or you can host your own party, or: you can head over to the Floyd Theater for their annual Oscar Watch Party. Grab some friends, put on your finery (because before the Oscars, all the celebrities on the red carpet are asked, “Who are you wearing?” which always irks me) and gather with your fellow Floyd patrons to watch as Lincoln

likely sweeps the game. (I don't necessarily really think that will happen. I'm banking on a couple of upsets – I learned my lesson two years ago when my initial pick for Best Picture was

    The Hurt Locker

    but switched to the “surefire”

    Avatar

, which then lost, and I had to take a double shot and lost the game.)

It's all free (including provided snacks) and it starts this upcoming Sunday at 7:00. The Floyd Theater is located on the third floor of the Student Activities Center on the U of L campus. Find all the information you need for the night at the Facebook event page and at the Oscars official website.

    About Allan Day

There are legitimate theories that the Big Bang originated from the collapse of a black hole in a fourth-dimensional universe. This stuff fascinates me, and I love reading about it. I love reading about science. And about anything, for that matter, provided it's interesting - and everything is potentially interesting, so I'm fascinated by a lot of things. I also read a lot of fiction (Kurt Vonnegut deserves deification) and watch a lot of movies (Charlie Chaplin also deserves deification). I've made a few short films myself. I'm also a writer of everything - I'm close to a Bachelor's in English at IUS. My life consists of reading, writing, bartending, and taking care of my daughter full-time. Life is busy and life is stressful, but that's why there's music and art and other forms of relaxation.
