This is it, friends: the last chance to catch film screenings at the University of Louisville Floyd Theater before the semester ends. I know, I know – where are we going to get to see such great movies at such a great venue for such a great price? Alas, we will have to wait until the fall. (In the meantime, I direct you to the Village 8 Louisville Exclusives series.) Sad as it is, the Floyd Theater has opted to go out with a bang, leaving us with a warm feeling in our hearts.
First up, tonight (Thursday) the Floyd presents two screenings of the classic Robert Zemeckis masterpiece “Back to the Future”! Do I really need to recap the plot for you? If you don't know it, be sure to go! If you do, you will probably be going anyway. “Back to the Future” tells the story of Marty McFly, 1980s high school student, who travels back in time to the 1950s with the help of a now-legendary Delorean. Once there, he accidentally prevents his parents from meeting and has to fix the mess before he is erased from existence! Good fun. “Back to the Future” plays at 5:00 and 8:00.
The season closes Friday night with a very special midnight movie: the cult classic “Fight Club”! If you have somehow not seen this masterpiece, you really
need to go. Based on the book by Chuck Palahniuk – and much better - “Fight Club” is about an unnamed man who realizes that everything the world holds dear, everything material, is meaningless. He teams up with the enigmatic Tyler Durden to form Fight Clubs, where the participants meet to beat each other to a pulp. These activities escalate, however, and eventually full-blown violent civil disobedience is underway. The film is a visual orgasm of shock and awe – don't miss it.
The Floyd Theater is located on the third floor of the Student Activities Center on the U of L campus. Admission for "Back to the Future" is free; "Fight Club" is $1.50 for students and $3.00 for the general public. More information can be found at the SAB Film Committee Facebook page.
