Looks like the spring semester is in full swing. I know this because, even though I'm not in school, many my friends and filmmaking participants are, and I can't get hold of them to hang out or make movies. Too bad – last night, one of you missed a pretty interesting movie night at my house: a double feature of Uwe Boll sequels. They were so bad that at one point my friend forgot which one we were watching. This is more important than school. Clearly.
Hopefully, however, you can make time to check out this week's films at the University of Louisville Floyd Theater, the comfy and cozy on-campus center for fantastic film showcasing.
It starts tonight, Thursday, with 50/50
. Screenwriter Will Reiser based his script on his personal experiences dealing with cancer – a pretty serious subject, but laughter is the best medicine, apparently, so he wrote this comedy (sort of). My heterosexual man-crush Joseph-Gordon Levitt stars as Adam, a 27-year-old not ready to hear his possible death sentence. Seth Rogen co-stars as his friend Kyle, who helps him to get through it.

This weekend brings multiple screenings of
, which has one of the best horror movie trailers I've seen in quite a while. Unfortunately, the film isn't as scary as the trailer, but it is still a well-acted and entertaining watch. Ethan Hawke plays Ellison Oswalt, a true-crime writer working on a new book. He finds a collection of home movies showing horrific murders, and he notices a pattern: a symbol representing a demonic entity.
Sinister
plays on Friday and Saturday at 5:00 and 8:00.
And finally, a bonus! Friday night, the Floyd presents a midnight screening of
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
, a film which surely needs no introduction, as King Arthur and his knights set out in search of the fabled artifact, encountering all sorts of wonderful trials and tribulations along the way.
Admission to the films is $1.50 for students and $3 for the general public. The Floyd Theater is located on the third floor of the Student Activities Center on the U of L campus (look for the clock tower). Further information can be found at the SAB Film Committee Facebook page.
