Nestled within the newly renovated White House Center is a lovely little boutique called Mariposa, run by local resident Laurie Jacobs. In business since February of this year, Mariposa specializes in fine consignments. And these consignments certainly are fine. I almost walked out of that store with a beautiful beaded gown that I have absolutely no use for. But for a mere $26, it was quite the steal.

Damn. Perhaps I should go back.

But wait, there's more! Also inside this boutique is PANNO Handbag Studio by designer Stephanie Prather. Pictured above is a selection of her handiwork. This display is what actually drew me into the store, as I was on Pearl to visit the art gallery in the same building.

Stephanie's handbags come in a variety of shapes and sizes (from cute little handheld to massive hobo bag), and are personalized with different fabrics, trim, feathers, flowers, lining, etc. There was even a gorgeous little matching bag and hat combo designed for a little girl.

Wouldn't this be just the perfect place to get your Derby accessories? Stephanie doesn't just sell these pre-made handbags, however. The main thrust of her business is in custom design. That's right, handbags (and hats!) designed to your personal specifications! Now, she generally requires 2-3 weeks for a personalized order, but when I talked to her yesterday she did say there was still time for something simple. If you act fast. For those who want to make their own stuff, she also hosts PANNO Studio parties.

Talk about your one-stop shopping for Derby. Visit Mariposa for the dress (and perhaps shoes), see PANNO for the handbag, and then cross over to the Gallery on Pearl for some beautiful jewelry crafted by local designers.

Mariposa and PANNO are open Tuesday thru Friday 11:00-6:00 and Saturday 11:00-4:00.

The Gallery on Pearl is open Tuesday through Friday 11:00-5:00 and Saturday 11:00-3:00. They are located at 222 Pearl St. in Downtown New Albany.
