The monthly InKY Reading Series takes place this Friday, and sign ups for the open mic portion are from 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. The open mic portion will take place until 7:30 before the featured musician and readers will begin. The InKY Reading Series is a monthly music and literature event held on the second Friday of the month (September through May) at the Bard's Town, which is at the corner of Speed Ave and Bardstown Rd.
The free event will feature music by Heather Summers plus readings by Sarah Gorham and Michael Griffith. Heather draws from the roots of dusty blues and folksy gospel, offering a unique inspiration. Sarah has four collections of poetry under her belt and has been published in an impressive list of publications like Paris Review and Best American Poetry. She has also been the recipient of many grants and fellowships. She began Sarabande Books in 1994, which recently received funds from the National Endowment for the Arts. She currently serves as its President and Editor-In-Chief.
Michael Griffith is author of three books: Trophy, Bibliophilia, and Spikes. He has had fiction and nonfiction published in notable publications like Oxford American, New England Review and the Washington Post. He has also received several fellowships, including one from the National Endowment for the Arts. He is currently the Associate Professor of English at the University of Cincinnati and teaches in the Sewanee School of Letters as well. Current work also includes being the founding editor of Yellow Shoe Fiction and the Fiction Editor at Cincinnati Review.
The InKY Reading series has been showcasing literary voices for seven years in Louisville. They showcase local writers but have also featured writers from all over the country. Most of their featured readers have at least one book that has been nationally distributed although they enjoy showcasing local emerging writers as well. They pay their featured writers and musicians a small honorarium. More information can be found at their web site.
