Traditions and changing times collide in the production of Fiddler on the Roof, which will premiere at Assumption High School tomorrow.
All performances of Fiddler on the Roof will take place at Assumption High School, located at 2170 Tyler Lane in the Highlands section of Louisville. The opening night performance will be Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. Other evening performances will take place on Oct. 30, Nov. 4, 5, and 6 at 7 p.m. each night. Matinee shows will occur on Oct. 31 and Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.
Tickets for Fiddler on the Roof are $10 for adults, $7 for students, and $7 for senior citizens. Tickets can be reserved online at Assumption's Rose Theatre Company's website or can be purchased at the door. Fiddler on the Roof features Tevye, a dairyman and highly religious in 1905 Russia, attempting to find suitors for his three oldest daughters. However, he finds himself going against changing times and traditional values as the daughters make their own decisions on love.
Jerry Brick created the music for Fiddler on the Roof. Joseph Stein created the book, and Sheldon Harnick worked on the lyrics. Fiddler on the Roof is based on Sholem Aleichem's stories. The musical includes several memorable songs, including Matchmaker, Matchmaker, If I Were a Rich Man, and Sunrise Sunset.
Fiddler on the Roof has been seen multiple times on Broadway, including more than 3,200 performances during its initial run at the Imperial, Majestic, and Broadway Theatres between 1964-1972. The show was most recently seen on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre from 2004-2006.
Following Fiddler on the Roof, Assumption High School and the Rose Theatre Company will present the BLOOM theatre project, which will deal theatrically with social issues. The production will occur in late February.
