    Bit to Do

For many in the Louisville area and southern Indiana, fall is a time of tradition, and one favorite autumn ritual for many local families is a visit to Joe Huber's Family Farm and Restaurant in Starlight, Indiana. This family-run business, now operated by the seventh generation of Hubers, is both a beautiful location for an October outing and a fun destination for children of all ages.

Pumpkin-picking is always one of the most popular seasonal attractions at Huber's, and this year is no exception. Families take a wagon ride out to an enormous pumpkin patch, where they can choose their own future jack-o-lanterns. Those interested in apple-picking in the scenic orchards are also able to do so for a short while longer, until the weather turns unseasonable. Live entertainment will be provided in the Outdoor Pavilion throughout the month of October; acts include Lori Clark and Dennis Hill of Wapituli, and Josh and Holly, who were featured on the CMT program, Can You Duet? A buffet is served every day in the corporate picnic barn, dishing up all the delicious home cooking that has made Joe Huber's Restaurant famous (check out their $2 coupon for the buffet on their website homepage), and on the last Sunday of the month, the restaurant staff will be feeding you and your family in costume! A new attraction for those 21 years of age and older is a buggy ride through the woods around the farm, and of course, kids interested in feeding the friendly critters of Huber's may take a tractor ride out to the pasture.

If you still need an excuse to visit Huber's Family Farm, general manager Kim Huber Kaiser has a few simple, appealing reasons: "It's such a beautiful drive out here to Starlight, and the countryside is really stunning. We have fall decorations up in the Farmer's Market and the Restaurant. It's just a great time of year to be at Huber's."

Joe Huber's Family Farm and Restaurant is located at 2421 Engle Road, in Starlight, Indiana. Wagon rides out to the orchard and pumpkin patch are free. Dennis Hill and Lori Clark will be performing from 1 to 5 p.m., on October 15 and 16, and Josh and Holly perform from 1 to 5 p.m. on October 8, 9, 22, and 23. Buggy rides cost $20 per buggy and are available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and weekends from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission to the Barnyard is $4 for ages 2 through 18 (parents are admitted for free). Call 819-923-5255 or visit www.joehubers.com for any additional information.

    About Karen Ellestad

When I was seven and my brother was eight, we both wrote to 'Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?' for a free t-shirt. Two weeks later his arrived in the mail, signed by Carmen Sandiego herself, accompanied by an autographed picture of the cast, an official membership to the 'Gumshoe Club,' and a Rockapella casette tape. I got a postcard.
