    Bit to Do

In summertime we adorn our homes with fresh flowers, plant seeds in our gardens each week to harvest fruits and veggies that are even fresher than the supermarket, we work those long overtime hours to fund our fresh new summer wardrobes, and of course we want the freshest ingredients in all of fresh summer-themed meals. Summer is a beautiful transitional season all about being fresh.

But what about the adults living in Louisville that can’t afford fresh food or the luxury of fresh new clothes?

According to Dare to Care Food Bank, nearly 16% of adults living in Louisville go without enough food to lead a healthy lifestyle, which means the margin is even greater for the kids of our community with a whopping 20%. To make this statistic clearer, one of every six people you know could fall into this category.

It seems as though facts like these always come to mind during winter. Information about food drives plastered all over the bulletin boards at work, and the Salvation Army taking donations in front of every supermarket during the holidays makes it so easy to give to those less fortunate. But during the summer, bulletin boards are covered with information about picnics and amusement park ticket discounts, and Santa Claus isn’t ringing a bell in front of the grocery store.

But families all over Louisville are still in desperate need, and helping out is easier than you’d think. Dare to Care Food Bank accepts donations all year long from manufacturers, farmers, retailers, and community food drives. You can make a donation this month at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft until July 31st as the business, which has partnered with Republic Bank on this effort, strives to collect 1,000 pounds of food. And you can donate next month at Brownsboro Hardware & Paint’s “EGGfest” on Friday, August 7th from 7pm-9pm and Louisville City FC’s Dare to Care night on August 22nd at 7:30pm.

And you don’t have to be a big company to host a food drive. It’s simple to start your very own at your school, business or religious institution. Visit Dare to Care Food Bank’s website to find out how and to learn more about other ways you can help feed the community!
