Yoga is nothing new, according to Yoga Journal, an estimated 15 million Americans partake in yoga each year. But the newest yoga trend to sweep the nation is the concept of "family yoga" where yogis are created even in infancy.

Yoga is known to increase flexibility, detoxify the body, increase strength, balance, stamina, and above all else, create a sense of calm. As an adult, I search for this fleeting phenomena of "calm" throughout my hectic weeks and look forward to a glimpse of it each yoga session. That is the most important concept yoga has taught me--to breathe and strive for the calm. So it makes perfect sense, that children would also benefit from this ancient practice.

    At

    Shine Studio

, located off Market Street (the little green building behind the green building), next week your budding yogis can practice family yoga for FREE! According to a press release, "To help foster younger yogis, Maria Whitley, owner of Shine, is offering Baby Yoga (2 months-1year), Itsy Bitsy Yoga (1-2 year-olds), and Pre-School Yoga (3-4), and Yoga Kids (4-9 year olds)."

The free demos are as follows:

    • April 12: Free Demo Baby Yoga at 11:00 a.m.

    • April 14: Free Demo Pre-school Yoga at 3:00 p.m.

    • April 15: Free Demo Itsy Bitsy Yoga at 11:00 a.m.

Each session will introduce the movements and philosophies of yoga as well as offer a chance for creativity and self-expression. "Kids take the poses to the next level by adding their own imagination--picture barking while in downward dog," said Courtney Sandora from Shine.

Shine also offers music classes, drum circles, camps, adult yoga, body work and massage, Cranio-Sacral, hot stone therapies, prenatal massage, and a host of wellness classes.
