Want to get an idea of what infinity is and how we exist in it? This coming Tuesday, April 19, MIT physicist Alan Guth will talk about his variation of the Big Bang theory in “Inflationary Cosmology: Is Our Universe Part of a Multiverse?” at the University of Louisville’s Belknap Campus.

Inflation postulates that the universe expanded dramatically for a period of time shortly after its explosive birth in the Big Bang. The theory has led to the possibility that eternal inflation can create a “multiverse”—an infinite series of small universes with different physical properties.

Guth, author of The Inflationary Universe: The Quest for a New Theory of Cosmic Origins (Basic Books), is the Victor Weisskopf professor of physics at his alma mater, whose faculty he joined in 1980 after postdoctoral positions at Princeton, Columbia and Cornell universities and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. He is the 2009 recipient of the Institute of Physics’ Isaac Newton Medal.

The free, public talk will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium. For more information, contact James Lauroesch at 502-852-1394 or jtlaur01@louisville.edu.
