The University of Louisville will mark the end of its “Week Without Violence” with a candlelight vigil and march around campus this coming Tuesday, September 27 as part of its annual “Take Back the Night” event. The evening, which is designed to raise awareness about violence against women, will feature musical and dramatic performances and remarks by UofL President James Ramsey and community activists including Marta Miranda, director of the Louisville Center for Women and Families, and human trafficking activist Gabby Maxedon.

The free event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Red Barn, next to the Swain Student Activities Center. Additionally, a march to campus organized by MensWork in support of the program, will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Center for Women and Families, 927 S. Second St.

The first Take Back the Night event took place in Philadelphia in 1975 and has since become an international movement, most notably on college campuses. UofL’s Prevention, Education and Advocacy on Campus and in the Community (PEACC) offers the program to support students and others affected by dating or domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and harassment.
