Catch The Canoemobile for free fun on the Ohio River [Family and Parenting]
    Print this page

Just because some of us live in the city, doesn't mean we can't get a little outdoorsy, right? If you and your child are interested in exploring the beauty of the Ohio River (or are just looking for something fun to do on a weekend), check out The Canoemobile program! Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures (UWCA) in partnership with Metro Parks' Jefferson Memorial Forest will be offering rides in Voyageur canoes on October 5th and 6th. Rides will leave from Shawnee Park (October 5th) and Riverview Park (October 6th).

So, what's more fun than a canoe ride down the Ohio? A FREE canoe ride. That's right, the trips are free and open to groups and individuals ages three and older. Space is limited (Voyageur canoes can carry up to 15 people per ride), so pre-registration is required. You can secure your spot on the canoe by calling Jefferson Memorial Forest at (502) 368-5404.

The UWCA's Canoemobile program began in the Minneapolis / St. Paul, Minnesota area with a goal of serving urban youth by promoting outdoor activity and environmental education. In addition to docking in Louisville, the program is touring several major cities throughout the U.S. that border a major river.

To help alleviate any safety concerns, it's helpful to note that, in addition to Voyageur canoes being stable and reliable, safety equipment and trained staff will be provided. Organizers suggest wearing comfortable outdoor clothing (ixnay on the polyester), and no flip flops, please. Water coolers will be on board, so feel free to bring a refillable water bottle as well.

In case you miss the opportunity to catch a free ride or would prefer to venture out solo, canoes and kayaks will be available for rental (at Riverview park only), for $15. Contact River City Canoe & Kayak to reserve (502) 384-3737, or info@rcckonline.com).

The rides are sponsored by Metro Council District 12 Councilman Rick Blackwell and District 5 Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton, with support from River City Canoe & Kayak. For more information, please visit

    About Juels Branham

I'm a long-time Louisville lover & 502 extraordinaire. I belong to the MOT club (or, mother of twins), and am constantly amazed at all the quirks and perks of our adventures. I graduated from UofL (twice) and am proud to be a Card! During my occasional "me time," I enjoy indulging in epicurean delights, bargain hunting, and listening to Wu-Tang really loudly in my car.
