The much-anticipated Big Four Pedestrian Bridge is set to open today with an opening celebration at Waterfront Park. The Big Four Bridge Project was announced in 2011 to convert the abandoned 1895 railroad bridge to a pedestrian walkway.
The pedestrian bridge spans the Ohio River and connects Louisville to Jeffersonville, Indiana. In addition to foot traffic, bikes will also be welcome.
Entrance points will eventually be located on either side of the bridge, though currently, only the Louisville side is accessible. Walkers and bikers who enter on the Louisville side will not be able to descend in Jeffersonville, but will have to return and exit via the Louisville side.
At just shy of one-half mile long, the bridge is a welcome addition to the Louisville park system, and will be open 24 hours a day.
The opening of the bridge will take place at 11 am Thursday at Waterfront Park. All are welcome to attend.
