Agatha Christie is arguably one of the most well-known, well-read novelists of the 20th century. One of her most famous stories is And Then There Were None, a murder mystery. The story begins with ten people of varying backgrounds and social status called to an island home. Some came to work at the house while others came as guests, but they were all deceived. An announcement via gramophone accuses the group of crimes from their past, and one by one each person pays the ultimate price. But who is the murderer? I had the pleasure of attending And Then There Were None at Derby Dinner last night. As always, the cast and crew of Derby Dinner never cease to amaze me. With such a huge cast on the stage all at once, so many lines to remember, and a dizzying plot, I’m certain this production is one of the toughest to perform night after night, but they did an amazing job.
My two favorite performances of the night were given by David Myers as General Mackenzie and Cary Wiger as Dr. Armstrong. General Mackenzie is an older man accused of sending his wife’s lover to his death in the war. Myers perfectly portrays a senile man accepting his doom. Dr. Armstrong is a nerve specialist accused of killing a patient when he was a surgeon. For a nerve specialist, this doctor is very fidgety and worried, and Wiger’s performance is spot on.
If you enjoy mysteries or if you’re looking for a suspenseful night out just in time for the Halloween season, I highly recommend And Then There Were None. The show runs until November 8th. There are evening performances every night of the week except Mondays. There are also matinee performances on Wednesdays and Sundays.
