Derby.. the word alone sparks thoughts of fashion, big money, and high dollar fun for most Louisvillians. This time of year is especially fun for most of the residents of Louisville, the time of the year when our little city shines and attracts an enormous amount of attention; but there are some who dread this season. What is a person to do if big hats, mint juleps, and losing money is not their ‘thing’? Fear not my Derby Dodging Friends; I have an answer that is just a short road trip to the south. New Orleans, yes home of Mardi Gras, offers an alternative to ponies by way of music and a southern celebration as only The Big Easy can offer. April 26 – May 5 is the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Held at the Church Hill Downs owned racetrack in Louisiana, this festival has parades, big name music, and southern food. Tickets can be purchased and more info, such as lineups and hotel links, are available online. While I do love a good Derby, the temptation of a new experience and trading in a dress for a jam session are too great. After all there will always be Derby number 140.
