We all have it, the terrible winter blues that can bombard you like a bad head cold. Trust me,  wanting to hibernate from January 1st to mid-March is an easy fix, but not one that will help rid you of seasonal depression. So, get out of bed and try some of these small things to help cure your winter blues.

    1. Add a little (living) color to home
I’m talking plants. Did you know there are plenty of plants that survive (and thrive) just as well in front of well-light window? Two great green options are Splitleaf Philodendron and Pothos. Both do well in low light and are perennials so they will last you a few years. They also have a beautiful rich green color that can solve your winter blues problem in a flash. If you want colors on the warmer side of the spectrum, then try orchids, amaryllis bulbs, or bromeliads. Nanz and Kraft always has the best plants in Louisville, but also try Plant Kingdom or your regular hardware stores, like Home Depot or Lowes.

    2. Take a weekend trip
Having something to look forward to always improves my winter blues. There are great weekend trip options that are just a few hour drive from Louisville to take a little refresher. Try French Lick Resort, where you can gamble, hit the spa, grab a few cocktails, and have a nice relaxing luxury experience.

    3. Pamper yourself
Speaking of the spa, this the ultimate way to get you out of that winter funk and lucky for you, Louisville offers a few great places to do just that. Pampering yourself can mean anything from a mani/pedi to a massage, facial or even a chemical peel if you’re really feeling down. Le Bliss Salon & Spa gives excellent facials and massages, CND Nails off Rudy Lane includes a paraffin wax treatment with a signature manicure and also gives a better mani/pedi than any other salon & spa in the city (trust me on this one), Radiant Skin Treatments will give you a chemical peel that will really kick that dull, dry skin into tomorrow, and Joseph's Salon & Spa will give you a new do + color for a very pretty penny, but one that will last you many compliments and months.

    4. Join a club
An easy way to meet new people and fill up your dull January schedule is to join a club (on my New Year’s Resolution’s list too, view the article here). Check out New 2 Lou’s organizations page to find something that suits you as well as our events calendar for daily activities around Louisville and Southern Indiana.

    5. Learn Something New
Learning something new or adopting a new hobby is a great way to spice up the month of January and beyond! Take a cooking class like the awesome ones at Cooking at the Cottage, learn a new language (also on my New Year’s Resolution list) here among many other great Louisville locations, or become more knowledgeable about bourbon and wine at Taste Fine Wines and Bourbon on Market Street.

    6. Throw a party
Now, come one, this is an easy one that everyone will enjoy. A party can be as simple as watching a weekly tv show (The Bachelor anyone?) with your friends, hosting weekly dinners (or trade off with friends to make it more cost effective), or even throwing parties like a grilled cheese off (yes, I went there and you should too). Keeping your calendar busy with weekly activities gives you something other than crawling back into your warm cozy bed to look forward to.

    7. Go Roller Skating
Remember those freakin’ awesome middle school birthday parties at Champs Rollerdrome (yes, I went there again)? I’ll refresh your memory. Roller skate all day to some killer beats for only $8.50 then hit the concession stand. If your current weekend plans are struggling on the line of staying home in your warm cozy bed or getting active then this may just the ticket to seriously spice up your life. If you’re walking down memory lane then heres another: Iceland.

    8. Try a new restaurant
This is a no brainer, but some of us like to stick to the old. I get it, there are some good local restaurants that have been around for awhile, but there are also some new local restaurants that are unbelievably good. Check out our article here for 25 that opened in 2014.

If you think i’ve missed a crucial to-do on my winter blues list, then please comment below! And just remember, Spring is right around the corner...
