The Slow Food movement is all about trying to preserve food traditions from the days before a family meal meant something from the microwave or McDonalds.

Next Sunday, the Kentucky chapter of the Slow Food movement,  Slow Food Bluegrass is holding its 3rd annual picnic at Locust Grove from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The picnic is a day of entertaining and educational events that introduce old-fashioned ideas about food  back into a modern lifestyle. It's also cheap, and family-friendly. Admission is $5 per car, but free for bikers and walkers.

Local experts will give talks and demonstrations about topics like backyard chicken farming, cheese-making, and meat-smoking.If baking is your thing, you've got a week to get ready for the best local dessert contest. The only rules are that desserts must be homemade, and must include locally-grown fruit. There will also be a "Cast-Iron Chef" contest where three local chefs will prepare a main course, side dish, and dessert using secret local ingredients.

Also, stick around for a screening of the movie "Fresh." Here's how it was described in a press release

"FRESH the movie celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are reinventing our food system.  Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision of our food and our planet’s future.  FRESH addresses an ethos that has been sweeping the nation and is a call to action America has been waiting for."
