Updated Thurs., Oct. 28: Tonight's show is cancelled.

Live, this Thursday at Expo Five is 30 Seconds to Mars.  Led by lead singer, actor, and pop phenomenon Jared Leto.  Formed in 1998 by frontman Leto and his older brother, 30 Seconds to mars found success in the 2000s with a mix of post-grunge, screamo, and hard rock.  The band gained a modest audience with its debut album, but it was the platinum-selling sophomore effort A Beautiful Lie that officially opened the flood gates in 2005, securing the band a frequent presence on MTV while paving the way for a number of successful tours.  By placing all-access passes into 12 copies of their album, the bandmates also showed a savvy appreciation for marketing, which they revisited several years later by putting fan's photographs on the cover of their third album, This Is War

Back in 2005 while going thru a phase of my life where I was listening to a lot of Chevelle I was able to catch 30 Seconds to Mars open up for these guys.  It was right around the same time that they dropped their hit single, "The Kill" off of their second album, A Beautiful Lie, and seeing them live was pretty dope I must say.  I wasn't star struck by the fact that their frontman was on the big screen, starring in such movies as Troy, Requiem For a Dream, and Fight Club, but the girl that I took was.  I didn't think that I'd initially dig them as they took the stage, but I gave these guys an honest listen, put aside my negative thoughts concerning why this band was getting so much exposure, as if it were maybe their lead singer having had some sort of radio pull because of his Hollywood status, and simply watched the show with the rest of the crowd. They had a captivating stage presence and were a great band to check out live, and sometime shortly thereafter this show they even went on to sell well over a million copies of that album, which was a pretty good indicator that it was indeed not solely Leto's status at all, but the band as a whole.

30 Seconds to Mars will be playing live this Thursday, October 28th at Expo Five, located at 2900 South 7th Street.  Tickets are $26 in advance at Ear X Tacy, and can be bought online, as well as at the venue, permitting that they haven't sold out beforehand.  Doors open at 7:30 pm, and the band will go on a few hours later after the opening acts.  For other listings of shows like this coming to town be sure to check out local promoter Terry Harper's website linked below, because from now until the end of the year and even beyond that he's got an impressive amount of talent coming thru Louisville.
